Song of the Moment: MC Lyte “Cha Cha Cha”

This will forever and always be one of my favorite songs. It’s actually not even my favorite MC Lyte song. That should let you know how much I love MC Lyte.

Kick this one here for me and my DJ.

And it’s shocking I’m the one you’re mocking
Oh yes, I’ve been watching you watching me
And like the fat on your back it’s plain to see
That you’re a wannabe, but you can’t be what you’re not
So you better start living with what you got

SOTM: “Go Hard” Some DJ, Kanye West and T-Pain

This song must be crack because I’m addicted.

I have my gripes with DJ Khaled and his gratuitous use of the word “nigga”. But Kanye goes hard.

It’d be easy to make jokes about this song but I think it’s likeable enough to be getting along with.

Box Office: Cadillac Records

I love Mos Def, most definitely. So I will support any project that he is a part of, most definitely. I really didn’t know what to expect when I went to see Cadillac Records. I’ve never  been much of a fan of Blues.

I appreciated the movie for the music. I don’t think that any of the characters were well developed. For one, there are too many of them to focus on developing any of them. After seeing it, I talked to my father who worked out some of the hazy details.

As far as the movie goes, it does a good job of celebrating the music but I don’t think it does a good enough job of explaining the significance of the music. My father, who might have been romanticizing the impact of the music, told me more in twenty minutes than the movie did in nearly two hours.

The actors did an EXCELLENT job. Especially Columbus Short as Little Walter. And in the end, I did walk away from the theater with a new respect for Blues thanks to the following songs.

“My Babe”. Little Walter.

“Smokestack Lightning”. Howlin’ Wolf.

“Hoochie Coochie Man”. Muddy Waters.

Song of the Moment: Bob Marley “Satisfy my Soul”

“Satisfy my Soul”. Kaya. 1978.

Oh, I said, baby, never let me be a loner,
And then you hold me tight,
you make me feel all right.
Yes, when you hold me tight,
you made me feel all right.

Alright, Alright! I Give Up!

I am actually feeling Beyoncè as Sasha Fierce. I can’t help it. She has so much attitude, so much personality. I’m feeling Sasha. The video for “Diva” is fire.

SOTM: The Horace Silver Quintet “Filthy McNasty”

Doin’ the Thing the Horace Silver Quintet at the Village Gate. 1961.

Horace Silver is a freakin’ genius.

This is the best song title EVER.

Christmas Frustrates Me…

Because I really suck at wrapping gifts. And because my mother wraps gifts so well, we are all expected to have expertly wrapped gifts to put under the tree. My gifts…no bueno. In fact, I think I have reached a new low. This morning, I took my time with the tape and the scissors and the wrapping paper. When I finished, the gifts looked as if a seven year old had wrapped them. My sister let me hear all about it too.

Whew. Glad I got that off of my chest.

Seriously, I love this time of year because everyone is in such high spirits. We’ve been listening to Christmas music since Friday. It’s officially time to get into the spirit of the holidays. :)

Q-Tip and Prince

I don’t know how late I am with this one…but I have one question…

Wouldn’t you hate to be the dude that got debo’d off of the guitar?

I mean, it’s Prince, and you kind of have to defer to him but you’re just gonna let a dude roll up and snatch your guitar?

I’m only joking. I would have loved to be there to see it happen. Q-Tip rocking with Prince, that’s dope.

Welcome to Graduation…

On this day we become legendary
Everything we dreamed of

It's been great but...it's time to go.

The Good, the Bad and the Just Plain Silly…

The Good:

Jeezy, T.I. and Ludacris  joined forces to rally voters in support of Georgia Democratic Senate candidate Jim Martin. Sadly Martin lost the race to Republican Saxby Chambliss (who has the greatest name ever). But it’s nice to see rappers show some continued interest in politics. That’s a good job fellas.

The Bad:

What the hell was Plaxico Burress thinking?! He shot himself in the leg? That’s no way to accrue street cred. Shot himself accidentally in the leg and now he’s suspended for the rest of the season. And Bloomberg is not happy.

That’s bad for Giants fans…

The Just Plain Silly:

Kanye West wants to intern at Louis Vuitton? I’m all for following your dreams but seriously, I can’t imagine Kanye being an intern anywhere. Maybe he will shadow some designers and learn about the business but he will not be doing the grunt work of an intern. That’s just plain silly.
